Alanya is an amazingly beautiful city and one of the most famous Turkish resorts on the Mediterranean coast. Geographically, the province is part of Antalya. The city is located near the rocky Taurus Mountains. It attracts not only with its developed infrastructure and beaches but also with its attractions associated with its centuries-old history.

Short story

The historical component of Alanya dates back to ancient Greek times. Then the city was located between Pamphylia and Cilicia. In the 2nd century. BC e. Diodotus Tryphon, the commander of the Syrian army, with the help of the Kilian sea pirates, seized the throne, choosing Alanya as a stronghold. The province was turned into an impregnable fortress, and several years after the usurper's death, it served as the headquarters for the Corsacs. In 67 BC. e. the sea robbers were put to an end. This occurred due to a decisive confrontation between Roman troops and the Corsacians. The empire fell under the onslaught of Pompey.

A few decades later, the governor Mark Antony gave the province to Queen Cleopatra. In 395 Alanya became part of Byzantium. The Byzantines and Romans fortified the city with defensive structures for centuries. The province changed hands many times. At the end of the 15th century, when the Turks ousted the Seljuks from Asia Minor, the city came under the protection of the Ottoman Empire. Before its decline, it had special commercial and military importance due to its excellent geographical position. In 1923, Alanya became part of the Turkish Republic.

First mention

It is still being determined who founded Alanya and when. The oldest of all mentions dates back to the period of the Khet kingdom (about 1800-1180 BC). During the Hellenistic period, the province was called Corakesium. During Byzantine times, it was given a new name Kalonoros (Kaloronas) or Beautiful Mountain (Magnificent Mountain). After the capture of the province in 1220, it was renamed Alayu - in honor of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad. In 1936, the city acquired its modern name - Alanya.
